Snow day won't change NPS' observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Norman Public Schools will be observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 19 in accordance with its Board of Education-approved 2014-2015 school calendar. Schools and all district offices will be closed on that day.
While this holiday is one of NPS' designated snow make-up days and NPS did have one snow day first semester, there is no need to use Jan. 19 as a make-up day. This is because, as in previous years, additional instructional minutes are built into each school day that the state allows NPS to accumulate and use for make-up days if and when it is needed.
Last school year, because of several lost school days due to inclement weather, NPS needed to use a combination of additional accumulated minutes and designated snow make-up days to comply with state law regarding the length of the school year. This year, having experienced only one snow day to date, NPS is comfortable using accumulated minutes and proceeding with its adopted 2014-2015 school year by observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
