NPS recruiting candidates for special education certification program
The Norman Public School District is recruiting candidates for a Special Education Certification Boot Camp, a program that allows individuals who meet certain criteria to become certified to teach special education.
Teachers who serve students with special needs are in high demand. While special education teachers typically earn more than traditional teachers, positions have been difficult to fill due to statewide teacher shortages.
The program is designed for individuals who are not currently certified to teach but have an undergraduate degree outside of the education field and an interest in working with students who have special needs. Qualified candidates also should have an interest in working in Norman Public Schools.
“We are fortunate to have one of the most robust special education programs in the state,” said Justin Milner, director of Special Services at Norman Public Schools. “Our students are thriving and we attribute this to the strength and dedication of our special education teachers and staff. This program will allow us to recruit individuals who are who are passionate about special education and provide the quality training necessary to be successful.”
The boot camp will be March 24 to June 24 and classes will be held in Norman Fridays from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants then will be required to complete 18 hours of graduate courses at an accredited university.
Following the initial boot camp classes, participants will be eligible to be considered for a vacancy in the district and, if selected, the individual can concurrently work in the district while they complete their graduate coursework. Participants that are hired by the district also will receive a $1,500 signing bonus.
“This is a great opportunity for individuals who have a passion for students with special needs to quickly transition into teaching and earn a salary while completing their higher education coursework,” Milner said.
