Martin hired to lead Norman High football team
The Norman Public School District has hired Rocky Martin to serve as Head Coach of the Norman High School football team. Martin, currently with Putnam City West High School, will join Norman High as a certified teacher for the 2017-2018 school year.
Martin most recently served as Head Football Coach at Putnam City West, where last year he led his team to the school’s first playoff appearance in 20 years and the most in-district wins in 15 years. Prior to assuming the head coaching duties in 2012, Martin served as a Varsity Assistant Coach for the school.
He also has served as a Graduate Assistant Coach at the University of Akron in Ohio, the Varsity Football Coach at Cherry Creek High School in Colorado and has previously taught and coached in Norman Public Schools.
“When the position came open, our goal was to hire an individual with strong leadership capabilities who understands the key components that are essential in building a program,” said NPS Athletic Director T.D. O’Hara. “Coach Martin’s body of work while at Putnam City West reflects those qualities we are looking for to lead the Norman High program and serve as a role model for our student athletes. We are glad to have him back in our district and I look forward to watching the school’s football program grow under his direction.”
Martin attended Colorado State University where he received a full athletic scholarship and played on the university’s football team. His team went to four bowl games and he was a starter in the 2000 Liberty Bowl.
“It is truly an honor to join the Norman High School Football program,” Martin said. “Though we loved Putnam City West, Norman is home and I am excited to get started. I look forward to becoming a part of the Norman family and building upon the great history and tradition.”
