District-to-District donation drive to benefit hurricane victims
The District-to-District Donation Drive between Norman Public Schools and Aldine Independent School District in Houston, TX started this week in the Norman community. This school district was selected by Norman City Councilmember Breea Clark after working with Houston City Councilmember Amanda Edwards to identify where help was still needed most. AISD was recommended due to over 80% of its students being identified as economically disadvantaged.
"On behalf of our Board of Trustees and the students and staff of Aldine ISD, I want to thank the Norman Public Schools and the City of Norman for their generosity and kindness as we recover from Hurricane Harvey," Aldine Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Wanda Bamberg said. "You do not know who much we appreciate your efforts. The supplies you are sending will be of great assistance to so many who are still in need. Again, thank you so much for reaching out to Aldine ISD. We will never forget the effort that has been put forth to assist our community."
The AISD Superintendent's office provided a list of specific items that will best help families in need. For the next two weeks, this donation drive will collect books, bedding, towels, socks, and underwear at all NPS schools, City offices, the Cleveland County Building, both Norman Public Libraries, the Police Department, Fire Station #1, the Norman Chamber of Commerce, and various local businesses. Items should be new and can be any size.
"So many children and families have lost everything as a result of recent hurricanes," said Dr. Nick Migliorino, Norman Public School District Superintendent. "We understand how natural disasters and the resulting trauma can impact communities. We are honored to have an opportunity to provide assistance to a school district that is facing unprecedented obstacles as they recover from the storms. We encourage the entire Norman community to join us in supporting Aldine ISD during this incredibly difficult time."
Donations will be delivered to Aldine on Saturday, October 7th. The expenses for the Donation Drive have been covered by a donation from Republic Bank & Trust, the boxes were donated by Budget Box and Bag, and the box posters were provided by King Kopy. Many local businesses have also donated goods and gift certificates as prizes for collecting the most donations at schools and city offices. These businesses include the NCED Marriott Hotel & Conference Center, the Custard Factory, Firehouse Subs, Climb Up, Scratch Kitchen & Cocktails, 2 Green Chicks, Beyond Massage, Apple Tree Chocolate, and the Sooner Bowling Center.
Councilmember Clark stated, “Watching our community come together to assist this school district as they recover from Hurricane Harvey has been a phenomenal experience. Norman is a wonderful community, and I am excited to see what our residents can do to help another community in its time of need.”
