Students named National Merit Scholar Semifinalists
The Norman Board of Education recently recognized 10 high school seniors for being named National Merit Scholar Semifinalists. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. Nearly 16,000 students from across the nation were named.
About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the program by taking a preliminary SAT, which serves as a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship program.
Semifinalists from Norman High are: Noah Alpers, William Cohen, Amelia Price, Augustus Kmetz and Cameron Spotts-Kalkhan. Semifinalists from Norman North are: Cade Ballew, Hannah Curtis, Charles Kolar, Wyatt Ozment and Miles Rex.
These academically talented students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 scholarships worth about $33 million to be offered next spring. To be considered for one of the scholarships, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.
Since 2008, Norman Public Schools have boasted 110 National Merit Scholar Finalists.
